Tattoo Removal Q & A

Why are tattoos so hard to remove?

The process of getting a tattoo involves using a motorized needle to inject ink into the deeper layers of your skin. Your body identifies the ink as a foreign substance and launches a fast response to try to eliminate it.

Some of the ink particles are small enough to be absorbed and flushed through your lymphatic system. Most, however, are too large to be effectively removed and simply remain in the deeper layers of your skin.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal works by using concentrated beams of light to blast apart the embedded ink particles and facilitate removal through your lymphatic system. At Donne Bella Laser MedSpa, the InversoⓇ Q-switched Nd yag laser is used for tattoo removal.

This system delivers short pulses of light with high-peak energy. That combination proves both effective and safe for your skin. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment of your tattoo, and various colors absorb that energy differently.

The treatment platform offers a larger-than-average spot size that enables shorter treatment sessions. It’s also a great fit for men and women with darker skin tones.

This makes it more challenging to fully eliminate certain ink colors. It takes several visits to achieve the best possible results.

After your session, your skin may be slightly swollen and red. You might notice the area is lighter or darker than normal for a period of time. You should take care to protect the area from sun exposure with clothing or a high-quality sunscreen.

How many laser tattoo sessions will I need?

During your initial visit, Dr. Hwang-Ki will evaluate your tattoo and give you an idea of what to expect. Many factors influence laser tattoo removal, including:

  • Age of tattoo

  • Depth of ink

  • Colors used

  • Depths of layers, if any

  • Skin type

Everyone’s body reacts differently to laser tattoo removal, so it will take some time to see how many treatments you’ll need. You can expect to see your tattoo fading in the weeks after your initial session. Some men and women are able to fully erase their unwanted ink, while a degree of shading remains in place for others.

Learn more during a consultation, which you can book online or over the phone. You can get a better idea of how many sessions are needed and what kinds of results you can expect, which enables you to make an informed decision about your care.
